A Doll’s House (Et dukkehjem), a three-act play by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen on 21 December 1879, shortly after its publication.
Set in a Norwegian town of the same era, the play follows the struggles of a married woman seeking self-fulfillment in a society dominated by men.
Though Ibsen denied writing it as a feminist work, it caused a sensation and provoked widespread controversy far beyond the stage.
Celebrated as one of Ibsen’s most significant plays, A Doll’s House became the world’s most-performed play in 2006, marking the centenary of Ibsen’s death. In 2001, UNESCO recognized its historical importance by inscribing Ibsen’s autographed manuscripts in the Memory of the World Register.
While most translations use A Doll’s House, some prefer A Doll House, a version considered more idiomatic in American English.
